Ancient Israel’s legal system is often overlooked because the texts are difficult to follow. Long lists of laws overwhelm the reader. We will enliven these texts by looking at how this ancient legal system disproportionately affected lower socioeconomic groups within ancient Israel. Then, we will turn to similar questions in Iowa. We will look at the effects of recent budget cuts to the Iowa Department of Corrections enacted after the 2017 legislative session.
