James & Eloise Gist’s “Hellhound Train: Resurrected”

Location: Whalen Cabin in Phelps Park, View map showing cabin location

Iowa filmmaker Steven Berry will join us IN_PERSON at Whalen Cabin to discuss one of his films. In 1929, Evangelists James & Eloise Gist self-distributed their historic cinematic sermon “Hellbound Train” to churches, theaters, and meeting halls across the country. The film was rediscovered years later in fragments at the Library of Congress. It has now been edited and restructured by Iowa filmmaker and Howard University film professor S. Torriano Berry who recreates a historical Gist screening program complete with church hymns led by Eloyce and a short sermonette by James, followed by a screening of the film and a love offering. (Will talk about the love offering as part of the presentation.)

Note: we will try to warm up the cabin some but note that our seating is metal folding chairs. Bring a blanket to make for a warmer seat (or bring a more comfy chair!)
